So, reading nature and I run across this article:
Evolutionary origin of insect wings from ancestral gillsSorry for all the non-science types who don't have nice institutional subscriptions to journals, but to sum up, this paper explains a likely origin for the innovation of insect wings from mutations in genes controlling development of gills in related crustaceans.
We have isolated crustacean homologues of two genes that have wing-specific functions in insects, pdm (nubbin) and apterous. Their expression patterns support the hypothesis that insect wings evolved from gill-like appendages that were already present in the aquatic ancestors of both crustaceans and insects. That is all.
