Fans of legitimate journalism will be glad to hear Judy Miller has decided to
resign from the NYT.She does, however, acknowledge her role as an innocent but gullible White House press core reporter in the wholesale acceptance of the WMD story in her
letter to the editor.Even before I went to jail, I had become a lightning rod for public fury over the intelligence failures that helped lead our country to war. Several articles I wrote or co-wrote were based on this faulty intelligence, and in May 2004, The Times concluded in an editors' note that its coverage should have reflected greater editorial and reportorial skepticism. That's big of her. However, this whole going-to-jail-to-protect-a-source thing is totally bogus. She wasn't protecting a source, she was protecting a character assassin. She was being used by Libby to attack political opponents of the White House just like she had been used to sell the WMD story. This is not the test case one should use to defend protection of journalistic sources, and I think the NYT realized they could do a lot better than Miller when it comes to covering the White House. Sorry, but if you're covering the White House for the NYT you need a better excuse than, "They told me there were WMDs! Cheney even pinky-swore that they were real in the hallway!"
