Predictions?
So everybody, big elections tonight in New Jersey and Virginia. Anyone want to make some Give Up predictions?

I'm thinking Corzine in NJ just because it's a democratic stronghold, but I suspect Kilgore will take VA based on his ingenious campaign of fear-mongering and appeals to red-state irrationality about taxes and property rights. We can hope that this will be the first time in US history that reason and sensibility will prevail over appeals to emotion and fear, but face it, it's unlikely.

Consider, VA is coming out of 4 beautiful years of leadership by a democratic governer with an 80% approval rating. If history is any guide it's about time for Republicans to take control, fuck everything up for 4 years, and then blame the Democrats for their own complete incompetence in governing.

This weekend, we got two copies of the "Democrat and Progressive Voting Guide". It compared the stands of Russ Potts (the lifelong Republican suddenly running as a liberal independent) versus Tim Kaine (the Democrat). The gist of it was that, according to the criteria of the flier, Russ Potts was way more liberal than Kaine and thus a better pick for the "Democrat[s] and Progressive[s]".

So of course you assume that the Potts campaign got some cash, and that they decided to make a splash in the liberal Charlottesville market.

Then you look at the fine print, and you read "Paid for by Virginians for Kilgore".

Slimy, eh?

So, is that a prediction for Kilgore winning based on scummy tactics?

More an anecdote I wanted to relate. One could argue that resorting to those tactics is a sign of desperation. I certainly hope that's the case, and that it backfires, or at least that it fails to make a difference.
