Democracy is overrated
Can anyone tell me why anyone bothered sticking up for the Palestinians?
Now really, electing Hamas?

It's also another nail in the coffin of Bush's exporting of democracy idea. Do we really want people who vote for Hamas to live in a democracy? Some people really are just too stupid to vote. What kind of political candidates campaign by driving around in pickups shooting rifles in the air? And what makes us think that the theocrats the Iraqis are electing will be any better.

This week has me down on democracy. First Canada, then Palestine. There don't seem to be any countries left where people vote in a sensible manner, and I'm including us.

Canada? I thought that our recent election turned out just about perfectly. We turfed out a party that had been in power for 12 yrs. But, even better, we (Canadians) replaced them with a minority party that has no allies in Parliament and thus no hope of doing much that counters the Canadian "consensus" (i.e. single-payer health care; same-sex marriage; regional equality, etc etc).

BTW, great blog.

Sorry, it must be that MRI thing is true. I see conservative and my brain shuts off.

He does sound like a bit of a jackass though, wants to go after gay marriage and the usual values crap. We've seen a lot of guys like that. You are lucky though that you have a parliamentary system, I'm glad that you are confident that this is a one time fluke, and not the beginning of a conservative swing gaining momentum in Canada.

There will almost certainly be a vote on same-sex marriage in the new Parliament. Given the current standings, it is very likely that the attempt to overturn the recent legislation will fail. I suspect that Mr Harper would be happy to see it fail; he can then turn to his social conservative supporters and say he did what he could. He knows that to remain in power he must keep a middle track.

If Harper does a good job wrt the economy, health-care, he might very well win a majority in the next election. That won't mean a swing to social conservatism: the conservative movement in Canada has been largely fiscal conservatism in nature.
