It's happened again. Ford, whose practice of funneling all of its hopes, dreams, and capital into SUV development, has seen its market share erode, its profits dissipate, and is now contemplating
cutting thousands of jobs and closing up to half a dozen plants. There's no word on whether or not any of the executives who approved the stupid strategy of "pour all of our money into SUVs" will get the axe, or if it's all going to fall upon the heads of the poor schlebs who work the line. I know which group my money's on.
As an aside, Ford is calling this restructuring the "Way Forward," which sounds to me like a certain
economic policy in which tens of millions of people starved to death. Good job there, guys.

If you actually read the Ford grandson's speech, he addresses a lot of your criticisms.
In particular he says that Ford, because of it's huge factories, has been rolling out product lines that fill assembly lines, not consumer demand. A stunning admission. They acknowledge the SUV focus was an error, and they made it knowingly because to change their factories over from SUV production would be so expensive. This move sounds like a plan to change the way they make cars so they can be more responsive to short term changes in consumer demand (like for hybrids).
So, you're right, and they admitted it.

Did he then end the speech with ritual suicide, apologizing to the 30,000 workers, their families, and the now-disgraced spirit of his great-grandfather?
Seriously, I posted before the announcement, so I was going on the speculation that was (correctly as it turns out) flying around.

You're speculation was highly accurate. What is surprising was the level of mea culpa that was delivered, actually criticizing their business model as non-responsive and sluggish to customer demand.
No Hara-kiri though. Too bad.
