So what do you guys think of
The Compact? I already know some people who approach this level of stripped-down existence. You can visit the Compact people's blogs
here and
here. I find something about buying nothing but food and underwear for 6 months at a time highly appealing, especially given how bad Ebert's recommendations have been lately (my main pointless consumerism is DVDs). It sounds like a neat existence, and I approve of the decrease in the purchase of incredibly useless crap.
I also wonder if they would consider allowing the purchase of electronic goods as part of their contract. There is no reason you shouldn't be able to buy mp3s online or a video game, unless it means you are then still plugged in to wasteful electronic products that you would have otherwise unplugged.
Finally, what has been the most useless piece of crap you've ever seen for sale?

By the way, for me the most useless piece of crap I've ever seen for sale was a motor-powered lollypop at a Florida Blockbuster.
Just think, you buy a lollypop and you get to throw away plastic, an electric motor (so iron, magnets, copper etc.) and a battery just so you don't have to tire your hand out while consuming your fucking lollypop.

For me this would be impossible. The urge to purchase books and craft items would swell within me until I turned into some kind of hyperliterary version of the hulk. Rather than being mean and green I would be "abusive and chartreus-ive".

I might (might!) be able to contain myself to only reading books on-line for 6 months, but does paying for the internet violate the Compact spirit?

Here is the most useless waste of consumer dollars:
The Posh Tots Victorian Playouse. Please, please, please click on the detailed photos thing. Please.
BTW, the Victorian Playhouse clocks in at only 23,000 bucks, and is therefore not nearly as expensive as some of the other items offered by Post Tots. But the photos...man!

If joining the Compact keeps me from buying the Posh Tots Vicorian Playhouse totally I'm out. Seriously, just forget about it.

Reen has rich-kid playhouse envy. I can tell.
Then again so do I. That kids house looks nicer than mine.
This reminds me of people who spend way too much money on their pets (and I know a few). How can one spend thousands of dollars on a dog's health when actual humans lack health care. How can one justify buying a house for child when there are actual humans beings that could readily use such a house? I just can't understand it.
Then again, I do hate dogs and children.
