No Speed Limit on Evolution
I guess this means we can go ahead with Bush's plans for mass extinctions on earth.
New mathematical techniques for interpreting the patterns of fossils in geologic strata indicate that previous rates of speciation following mass extinctions may have been over-estimated. In other words, in response to the opening of ecologic niches due to extinctions, evolution may occur at a much more rapid pace than the 5-10million years for each new species as was previously thought. Does this sound like punctuated equilibrium to anyone? I'm surprised the article didn't mention the late great Stephen Jay Gould although they do mention his mentor Normal Newell. |
