Baptists v Catholics
Remember when Buck was pissed last week over the Catholic Church's inability to accept women as equals. Well, not to be outdone, the fundamentalist Baptists are trying to one up the Catholics for sheer backwardsness.

The First Baptist Church dismissed Mary Lambert on August 9 with a letter explaining that the church had adopted an interpretation that prohibits women from teaching men. She had taught there for 54 years.

The letter quoted the first epistle to Timothy: "I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent."

This proves two things. To condemn conservative jackasses all you have to do is quote them. And, the same thing proves true for the Bible.

Oh geez, that's way too close to where I live. I don't think too highly of the intellect of the people around here, but I thought better than this... Figures.

...except in this case, condemning the Bible from this verse alone would constitute gross missinterpretation and a willingness to allow lines to be read far out of context (which is exactly how many of our conservative Christian neighbors tend to handle Christian and Hebrew scripture).
