Now the Republicans are blaming the troops, or the generals anyway:
I cannot comprehend why they think it's a good strategy to stick by Rumsfeld and Cheney. Just look at the title of this article in the NYT "Bush Works to Solidify Base With a Defense of Rumsfeld". Who is this base that likes Cheney and Rumsfeld? Cheney has an approval rating of 18%, Rumsfeld is about as popular as foot fungus. If they really wanted to boost their poll numbers by a few dozen points they'd fire Rumsfeld and put Cheney back in his undisclosed location for a few months.
I was watching Wolf Blitzer yesterday, and during one of the all-day-Kerry-update breaks they had Rep Boner on, and he said:
Well, it's the Generals that are at fault, not Rumsfeld...
Now, I wouldn't defend the Generals because I believe they are sanctioned psychopaths engaged in a deeply flawed profession, but in this case, Boner is just showing the total fucking disregard for the intelligence and attention span of the American nation at large.
You'd think that in a country that understands profit motive and efficiency we'd figure out a CEO that wasn't meeting quarterly expectations would be lopping heads and replacing them with others. This reflects on the head of the organization -- something that Rumsfeld allegedly knows due to his private sector experience.
Efficiency is what we worship, and the greatest crime in our culture is ineffectiveness (as in being caught breaking the laws vs. actually breaking the laws).
Anywhoo, Wolf never took the red-meat in front of him (Boner blaming the generals) until it showed up in the internets, on other channels and through reader feedback.
Oh yeah, Wolf Blitzer - a scumbug example of media consolidation and FCC approved onscreen fellation.
I must confess a grudging respect for Lou Dobbs of CNN. At least he knows how to go for the throat and I attribute a lot of the dissatisfaction with Republicans to him although he does seem just a bit xenophobic.
