Why wasn't this question asked and answered during the election? This sort of surprise shouldn't happen, and I wonder if more would vote for Lamont if they knew Lieberman was on the fence.
It seems like the threat to caucus with the Republicans is a card he would want to keep up his sleeve for a while. What's he trying to leverage by saying this now? Nothing can come of it until after January, as far as I can see.
But I doubt he'd ever do it because by sticking with the Dems he can still vote with the Republicans on every issue, but also be a stick in the mud on committees. Bolton, for example, never got an up or down vote because of Chafee. LiebesBush has just volunteered to be our Chafee.
I don't think Liesbush is a backstabber; I think he's a narcissist. I think one way to framing his actions is that it's "all about him." It's all about Joe--he runs for VP, and doesn't give up his Senate seat, because it's all about Joe. He loses the primary and nevertheless runs against the Dem opponent, because it's all about Joe.
This also explains why he can live in his own skin and not feel guilty about any of this. Joe is great, he's a hero. So, everything he's done is fine. It's all about Joe.

During the election he did say he'd caucus with the Democrats. Clearly no one pressed him on it, or he was just lying.
