One more day
Of Republican control of Congress.

Well, actually a little bit more since it will be a couple months before everyone gets sworn in I guess.

Dammit.

What do you think the Republicans are going to do with their lame duck session? You think they'll try stealing the Democratic plans so the Dems can't take credit for reform? Maybe they'll pass a minimum wage hike.

Alternatively, they might go the other way with lame-duck crazy laws meant to energize their base for the next time. Like pass laws the Democrats will have to spend the next two years correcting with great political costs. They'll come up with bills like, HR1294 - the "Puppies and School-prayer Bill, or HR1596 - the "Miniature American Flag and Partial Birth Abortion ban".

Cynical predictions anyone?

I was wrong on that other Ted, but I was probably just upset that my namesake would turn up so negatively in public light. However, I'll prognosticate anyway:

The media has been talking up the formidable Republican get-out-the-vote machine, so I view that as the pre-excuse for any surprising results that may occur. And if cheating would occur, it would tend to be in the Senate race -- it's simple math - you get more bang for the buck in the Senate and the scumbags stay bought longer. And you can dick-around with fewer ballots to get a desirable outcome.

So I'm going with Democrats in the House and Republicans stay in charge of the Senate -- and they snipe about the unruly kids in the House in that Bill Frist-patented whine that makes me want to punch him in the face every time I see him on TV.

If by some chance the Democrats take both houses, they need attach shit-eating provisions to the bills that makes the Republicans look even worse. They need to control the agenda instead of letting the Republicans take charge from the minority.

That's a good idea, I'd hope the Democrats would be smart enough to do that, rather than getting too compromisey.

The Republicans sure don't deserve any mercy.

Rev, your pre-hatched chicken counting is making me nervous. I agree with Ted in not ruling out the possibility of surprising results. Of course there will be election day fiascos like Diebold software 'errors', messing with minorities (posting signs about how no one with a felony on record can vote, etc), and a slew of other frauds. I think it's a long shot that something like that would actually influence an outcome, but I'm still going to save my gloating and plans for what the Democrats should do with all that new power in reserve until Wednesday.

Fair enough,
I'm not counting the Senate as won, but at least the House has to go our way. Which is enough leverage to start gaining some political points and momentum.

Although, the problem is, if we win the house and not the senate we run the risk of being painted as "obstructionists" (even though there's nothing wrong with being an obstruction to stupidity).

I just hope the Democrats are thinking about ways to leverage whatever power they get to embarrass the Republicans into committing to reform, and forcing the Bush administration to listen to its critics.

I don't think anything will change significantly after today. Incumbents have an incredible rate of retention. Historically, the US only sees large shifts in Congress when lots of incumbents retire. I also suspect that most voters are complete simpletons and may not even be cognizant of how bad the Republicans have been for the country. That's my only quibble with the Give Up philosophy actually. Most people are simpletons.

Also, I can swear in three languages. if anyone wans to learn some really fun dirty words let me know. My favorite is the Japanese "faku." This isn't realy a swear, but the Japanese also say bushusuru, "to do a bush," which means to vomit in public.
